The decision to import massive Missouri limestone boulders, some weighing several tons, elevated this project from beautiful to breathtaking. The natural crevices and character in each stone make the rec pond feel like a hidden lake discovered in the California hills.
The concrete pavilion floor overhangs the pond by three feet, creating a dramatic effect where the structure appears to float above the water. Bill and Dez can sit at the edge with their legs dangling over the crystal-clear pond below.
A natural stone bridge allows the family to walk across the waterfall and enjoy views from multiple angles. The custom bridge connects the spaces on either side of the swim pond.
The wetland filtration system keeps the water crystal clear and healthy without harsh chemicals. Bill and Dez’s relatives love visiting to swim alongside the koi fish. It’s like having a private lake on their property.
We designed the interface between the pavilion’s footing and the rec pond to allow both structures to work together seamlessly. When Bill asked, “If it were your pond, what would you do?” Our answer was simple: Missouri limestone. We traveled to Missouri to hand-select massive boulders with the character and crevices that would make this feature unforgettable.
After a chaotic first delivery day, we excavated the pond and installed the critical wetland filtration system—underlayment, liner, Aqua blocks, and three layers of specialized materials that keep the water crystal clear without chemicals.
We positioned the Missouri limestone with a large excavator, built the pondless waterfall beneath the rock bridge, and added retaining walls and landscape lighting. The rec pond looks like it’s been part of the landscape forever.
