California Aqua Pros has designed and built custom ponds and water features across the Bay Area since 1993. Greg and Marlo Purkey founded the company on the idea that water should look like it found its own way through a site. Every project begins with a visit to the property, and on a hillside lot that visit does most of the design work.
We built a project in the Oakland Hills that shows what this terrain makes possible. A twenty-two foot pondless waterfall runs alongside an existing staircase, so following the path down the slope means following the water. A natural boulder was core-drilled into a bubbling fountain, hand-stacked boulders replaced cinder block retaining walls, and an illuminated stacked-slate fountain took over a planter that had been sitting empty. A rainwater harvesting system was integrated into the design, and the whole build ran about four weeks. You can see it on our Oakland Hills project page.
Pondless waterfall construction is often the right answer in the hills. The reservoir sits underground, there is no standing water, and the feature follows the existing grade instead of requiring a level excavation. It also handles the heavy leaf drop from oak and bay canopy more forgivingly than an open pond does, and it can be converted to a full pond later.

Our History in Oakland
The Oakland Hills neighborhoods, from Montclair up through Piedmont Pines and along Skyline, sit against a corridor of regional open space. Redwood Regional Park and Joaquin Miller Park run along the ridge, and much of the residential property backs onto canyon or woodland. The lots are steep, the tree cover is heavy, and the views are the reason people live there.
Those conditions set the terms for any water feature. Equipment access has to be planned before anything else on a narrow hillside lot. Drainage off a slope needs to be understood so a new feature works with the water already moving through the site rather than against it. And the orientation matters more than usual, because on these properties the feature is generally viewed from a deck above rather than from the yard.

Can a water feature include rainwater harvesting?
Yes. Our Oakland Hills project integrated a rainwater harvesting system into the overall design, capturing roof runoff to support the landscape. It works well alongside a pondless feature in particular, since both use a buried reservoir and the systems can be planned together during the design phase.
How do mature trees affect a water feature on a hillside lot?
Leaf and needle load is the main practical issue. On a pondless feature the debris sits on the streambed stone and is straightforward to clear. On an open pond it goes into the water, so the skimmer has to be sized for the actual debris volume and the seasonal cleanout schedule matters more. We factor the canopy into which type of feature we recommend.
How long does a hillside build take in Oakland?
Longer than a flat lot, generally. Our Oakland Hills project ran about four weeks, which included the waterfall, three separate fountain features, boulder retaining walls, and the rainwater system. A simpler pondless waterfall on a slope is usually two to three weeks. We give you a realistic timeline after seeing the site.
